Solution/Vision Statement
I see a unique opportunity to marry traditional motifs with modern design sensibilities, especially in the context of religious monuments undergoing transformation. This vision aims to rectify the discord between past and present design elements, fusing them into a harmonious, multi-purpose pattern resource. The end goal is to create spaces that are both modern and historically rich, thereby honoring our shared cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs.
The Problem
The project was inspired by the observation that the carpet designed for the Hagia Sophia's reopening was not in harmony with its rich history. By examining various carpet designs in other converted monuments in Istanbul, this project aims to blend tradition with modernity in a unique design methodology.
Key Insights
Research revealed several incongruities in carpet designs within other converted religious monuments. A gap exists in this field, emphasising the need for cross-disciplinary collaboration to study past and present patterns and integrate them into a harmonious design.
This methodology, consisting of four carefully designed stages—Analysis, Research, Questioning, and Creation—serves as a comprehensive framework for introducing modern elements into historical monuments. Each stage has been meticulously considered to ensure both historical and contemporary values are preserved. Tried and tested by designers from various backgrounds, this adaptable approach is well-suited for any monument in need of a modern touch while retaining its historical essence.
How It Works?
The scope of understanding a monument's rich history requires a collaborative effort, made more challenging by pandemic restrictions. Therefore, digital techniques were utilized as a workaround.

The Opportunity
The methodology aims to guide current restoration efforts. It provides a blueprint for designers wishing to contribute new elements to historical monuments, ensuring that these additions are in harmony with traditional values.
