Family Tree

This independent print design project aims to connect family members by illustrating their relationships in an informal way. The process began by identifying the specific problem and then generating potential solutions based on user-focused research and considerations. The final product was presented as printed material.

The Problem
Family Tree boxes were distributed to all family members as meaningful gifts that preserved our legacy in a visually appealing and special way. The card format allowed younger members to play games, helping them memorize family members and become more familiar with their heritage.

Limitations

Given that there are hundreds of members in my family, it is impractical to represent everyone's name, date of birth, and picture on a single sheet of paper formatted as a 'tree.' Collecting all this information and determining relationships posed a significant challenge. The design had to appeal to young, middle-aged, and older generations alike.
I worked closely with older family members to collect historical records and anecdotes. After gathering all the information, a creative presentation methods was, aiming for a solution that would be unique and engaging for all generations.

The Solution

Information was gamified by creating a card for each person, featuring a picture on the front and name and date of birth on the back. These cards were then placed in a small box, accompanied by a map detailing relationships and lineage.

Design Outcome

A Creative Journey Through Family History

The impact

The idea originated when I noticed that there was no clear documentation within my family to clarify the relationships among members and relatives. Many relatives did not even recognize each other. This gap prompted me to unearth past records and merge them with current information, enhancing our shared understanding of our heritage. Additionally, the traditional family tree format lacked visual appeal and engagement.
